Manchester is perhaps most renowned as being the world’s first industrialised city. Overseeing the development of the biggest textile and cotton spinning plants, Manchester grew to one on of the dominant cities of commerce and industry. Manchester sustains a remarkable diversity by giving homage to some of the most reputable music halls in the country. It has two symphony orchestras and hosts a collection of concerts in the Manchester Opera house. Also laden with stunning city walks, Manchester is the closest thing to London north of the Thames.
It is remarkable to consider sporting connections of the city, hosting two of the biggest football clubs in the world. Manchester United are the most successful English team of the past two decades, giving birth to David Beckham amongst others. Their arch rivals, Manchester City, after a recent takeover, have become the richest club in football. The city also saw the influx of the world’s athletes in 2002, hosting the Commonwealth games.
Manchester is often acclaimed for its culture and nightlife. The Manchester scene became infamous in the 80’s with the production of bands such as the The Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses and later, Oasis. This, along with, the Acid-House explosion of the early 90’s, cemented the affiliation between Manchester and raving. This prevalent nightlife still sees over 500 licensed premises, making the city one of the UK’s premier destinations for an evening on the tiles.
